Gloucester Cathedral Commemorates WWI
Gloucester Cathedral will pay tribute to Gloucestershire's fallen on the National Day for Commemoration of the start of WW1.
From 09.00am on Monday 4th August the names of Gloucestershire’s fallen will be read out by members of the Clergy and Parish representatives in the Cathedral’s fifteenth century Lady Chapel where a new stained glass window commemorating the life and works of WW1 poet and composer, Ivor Gurney can be seen. All are welcome to come and sit for a time of reflection throughout the day until all the names have been read out in this beautiful chapel which has recently been awarded funding from The First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund for conservation work to be carried out.
Between 10.00pm and 11.00pm Gloucester Cathedral will join millions of individuals, households and companies in a national moment of reflection for “Lights Out” organised by The Royal British Legion. Everyone in the UK is being encouraged to turn off their lights – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. The aim is to light one million candles across the UK to remember each and every one of those Service men and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars.
Westminster Abbey will be leading the nation with a First World War vigil liturgy which will be broadcast live on the BBC.
The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said ‘Commemoration is different from remembrance. Commemorating the beginning of World War One is as much an act of penance as one of thanksgiving for sacrifice. It reminds us, not only of the scale of the conflict to come, but also how we are still in conflict in so many places throughout the world today. If humanity wants a change, we have to learn to love.’
