Take a tour of Gloucester Cathedral’s beautiful 15th century library

Take a tour of Gloucester Cathedral’s beautiful 15th century library

On Saturday 22 April you have the rare chance to visit the beautiful 15th century monastic library on a Cathedral Library Tour.

Located high above the main body of the Cathedral (you will need to go up thirty-eight spiral steps!) the library is a hidden gem that was originally part of the Abbey and holds a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. Volunteers and staff will be on duty to talk about the library and answer any questions.

This year we are offering visitors the chance to discover one aspect of the Library collections in depth.  On 22 April we will focus on geography and visitors will have an opportunity to see such treasures as 1611 Speed maps of the Country, our first edition Sir Robert Atkyn’s history of Gloucestershire with its glorious Kip engravings and the first eyewitness published account of Russian culture from the 16th Century.

Library Tours take place at 10.45am, 11.45am, 1.45pm and 2.45pm, tickets can be purchased in the Cathedral Gift Shop for £7.00, (under 16s go free).
Future tour dates and topics are 10 June – Medicine; 1 July – Music; 22 July - Bibles
