Library Tours at Gloucester Cathedral

Library Tours at Gloucester Cathedral

This June take a Tour of Gloucester Cathedral’s Library and try out a new Conservation and Collections Care Workshop

On Saturday 10 June come and visit the beautiful 15th century monastic library on a Cathedral Library Tour. Located high above the main body of the Cathedral (you will need to go up thirty-eight spiral steps!) the library is a hidden gem that was originally part of the Abbey and holds a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century.

This year we are offering visitors the chance to discover one aspect of the Library collections in depth.  On this month’s tour we will be looking at Medicine, including medieval doctors’ textbooks. Volunteers and staff will be on duty to talk about the library and answer any questions. Library Tours take place at 10.45am, 11.45am, 1.45pm and 2.45pm. Tickets can be purchased in the Cathedral Gift Shop for £7.00, (under 16s go free).

To complement the extremely popular Library Tours there will be a series of Conservation and Collections Care Workshops as part of the Cathedral’s Project Pilgrim engagement programme this summer. The workshop takes place in the Cathedral Chapter House on Saturday 10 June, 1.30pm to 4.30pm and will be led by Victoria Stevens ACR, an accredited Library and Archive Conservator.

Following a brief tour of the Cathedral’s beautiful library, the session will start with an overview of the purpose of conservation and the role of preservation in caring for the long-term future of the collections housed in the library. Using case studies, Victoria will highlight different approaches to stabilising objects for future use, effective storage, and show the decision making process conservators go through in each example.

This will be followed by a presentation given by Rebecca Phillips, Librarian and Archivist at Gloucester Cathedral, on the context of the objects chosen for the session, including their history, provenance and significance within the library and archive collections. More information about this workshop can be found on the Cathedral’s website.

Tickets are £10, available from 01452 768928, in the Cathedral Gift Shop or from www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk Ticket price includes hot drinks and cake for all attendees. If you have any questions about this course please contact Helen Jeffrey: helen.jeffrey@gloucestercathedral.org.uk

A library tour can be booked in combination with the workshop to give the most comprehensive context to the historic collections at Gloucester.

The next Library Tours and second Conservation Workshop will be held on Saturday 1 July.
