Uncover some hidden treasures at Gloucester Cathedral this Weekend

Uncover some hidden treasures at Gloucester Cathedral this Weekend

On Saturday 22 July you have the rare chance to visit the beautiful 15th century monastic library on a Cathedral Library Tour and to discover more about archaeology.

Climb the thirty-eight spiral steps to discover the library, a hidden gem that was originally part of the Abbey and holds a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. Volunteers will be on duty to talk about the library and answer any questions.  Whilst in the Library, visitors will have the chance to discover one aspect of the Library collections in depth.  This Saturday our display will focus on historic bibles and visitors will have an opportunity to see treasures ranging from the Coverdale Bible, Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible into German, to a personal embroidered bible and an 18th Century Welsh bible.

Kurt Adams from the Portable Antiquities Scheme joins us to celebrate the British Festival of Archaeology with an Archaeology Finds Roadshow.  Bring your own finds for identification, handle genuine and replica finds from the region. Plus lots of Children’s Activities including a Sandpit Dig!

Library Tours take place at 10.45am, 11.45am, 1.45pm and 2.45pm, tickets can be purchased in the Cathedral Gift Shop for £7.00, (under 16s go free). The Archaeology Finds Roadshow runs from 11.00am to 4.00pm in the Cloister Garth and admission is free.
