Winterwatch comes to Sherborne in Gloucestershire

Winterwatch comes to Sherborne in Gloucestershire

BBC Two’s Winterwatch returns to Gloucestershire next week to follow the wildlife which featured previously on Autumnwatch and Springwatch.

The presenters, Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan, Martin Hughes-Games and Gillian Burke will be seeing how the wildlife they have got to know over previously programmes is coping with the winter conditions.

The programme will be broadcast in the evening from Monday (29 Jan) to Thursday (1 Feb) and will once again be based in a stone barn on the National Trust’s Sherborne Park Estate.

Chris, Michaela and Martin will all be based at Sherborne and will explore how UK wildlife is coping with the onset of winter this year, while Gillian Burke will be live from other wildlife locations.

National Trust Countryside Manager Simon Nicholas said: ‘Winter can be a tough time for animals which have to work harder and search more to find food. But, because of that, they can often be seen more easily and we hope the cameras will find some of the wildlife spectaculars that we are used to seeing every day at Sherborne.

‘Thanks to the way our farmers provide supplementary feeding to farm birds, we have really strong flocks of linnets, corn buntings and others. Our red kites, which so enthralled Springwatch viewers, haven’t gone far. They have formed one of their winter roosts close to the estate where there are currently around 90 birds. Seeing flocks of raptors is always a remarkable sight.’

The Trust’s Sherborne Park Estate was chosen to be the first ever location to be used all year round for all three of the BBC ‘watches’, which started with Springwatch in May last year. It was chosen because of a mix of woodland, farmland and parkland which provides homes to an equally wide variety of wildlife.

The National Trust ranger team at Sherborne have been working with the farm tenants and the Winterwatch production team to set up more filming opportunities and, hopefully, find some of the rarer things which live nearby as well.

Winterwatch will be on air in the evenings on BBC Two from Monday 29 January to Thurs 1 February.
