Record-breaking panto & new season at the Everyman
Theatre is thriving in Gloucestershire as the Everyman in Cheltenham has announced record figures for the pantomime – Dick Whittington and His Cat – and has a vibrant new season in store.
The annual pantomime, which starred Tweedy the clown, was seen by more than 43,000 people over its six week run – up on the previous total of 42,494.
The Everyman’s Chief Executive, Mark Goucher said: “This just goes to show that theatre is alive and well in Gloucestershire! We are delighted that our pantomime was such a success and have already put next season’s show – Aladdin – on sale. The new brochure will be landing on doorsteps this week and we urge people to book soon for shows. The Play That Went Wrong is on this week and sold every single seat.”
The new brochure is packed full of shows to appeal for all ages and the highlight is the Everyman’s own production (with Mark Goucher and David Ian) of the Ronald Harwood comedy, Quartet. Starring Paul Nicholas; Sue Holderness; Wendi Peters and Jeff Rawle it opens here 8 -17th February then embarks on a national tour.
Birdsong, based on the Sebastian Faulkes novel, is a mesmerising story of love and courage and marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It’s in Cheltenham 19-24th February.
Also on a WW1 theme, The Winslow Boy is Terence Rattigan’s story based on a local boy, George Archer-Shee, whose family home was in South Woodchester near Stroud.
Other big shows include The Full Mony; The Comedy About A Bank Robbery; a powerful new production of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations ; Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie by David Walliams and a Touring Consortium Theatre Company premiere of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Short-runs include Tweedy’s Slapstick Symphony; Grumpy Old Women To The Rescue and music including tribute shows to country music, Billy Joel, Elton John and the Bee Gees.
The Everyman’s Studio Theatre also offers an eclectic range of productions from local and touring theatre companies as well as music nights.
