Newark Park closed after water leak

Newark Park closed after water leak

Newark Park has been closed as a result of water damage from burst pipes in the roof of the building caused by the freezing weather. The house is likely to be closed for several weeks. We hope to open the garden, grounds and tea pavilion on Monday (12 March).

There were three bursts in the pipes in the roof space which resulted in water damage affecting rooms on the east side of the house. The leak was found on Sunday morning by staff.

Stefanie van Stokkom, Operations Manager said:
‘Staff acted quickly to shut off the water supply and move the collection items out of the rooms affected. Fortunately most of the important items in the house collection didn’t get wet.

‘Drying work has already started on some wet rugs and floorboards are being lifted so that dehumidifiers can help to dry out the floors, and ceilings below.’

Surveyors are already assessing the impact of the leak on the building itself which will remain closed while the drying work is underway.

It is hoped to be able to give a more accurate date for the re-opening of the house in the next few weeks.
