Jazz in the Lady Chapel – Dom Franks’ StrayHorns

Events at Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral are very excited to announce their very first concert in the newly restored Lady Chapel.

On Friday 18 May at 7.30pm Cheltenham-based jazz group  Dom Franks’ StrayHorns will become the first live band to perform in this beautiful space.

The StrayHorn quartet was formed in 2010 to showcase the lyrical, original compositions of Cheltenham-based saxophonist Dom Franks, a former student of Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint, and winner of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician competition. The band’s sound is accessible and lyrical but rooted in creative improvisation and hard-driving grooves.

Dom Franks said, “We are really looking forward to bringing our music to such an iconic building as Gloucester Cathedral – this is going to be a very memorable evening!”

This concert forms part of the group’s current tour, and focuses on material from its newly launched third album ‘Living With Spooks’. The touring line up will feature guest pianist John Law, as well as regular members Billy Weir (recent winner of the Tony Levin ‘most swinging drummer’ award), bassist James Agg (John Law's Recreations, Tonight Show guitarist Mike Powers) and Alex Steele on keyboards.

“Engaging and highly listenable collection of originals featuring two excellent young rhythm section players as well as plenty of accomplished soloing from all performers’” (London Jazz Review)

Doors open at 7.00pm for pre-concert drinks in the cloister garth and a bar will be available during the interval.

Tickets are £16, available from www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk, the Cathedral Gift Shop or telephone 01452 768928.
