Chipping Campden

‘Chipping’ is derived from the Old English word "ceping" meaning market, "camp" meaning camp or enclosure and "denu" meaning valley so in effect Chipping Campden means ‘valley with enclosures and a market’.

Chipping Campden became an important centre for wool trading in the 14 & 15th century especially due to the demand for the prized wool from the Cotswold Lion sheep. One of its wealthiest inhabitants was wool merchant William Greville who invested much of his wealth into land and buildings. Greville House where he lived is one of the oldest buildings in the town.

The iconic Market Hall which was built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicke, a wealthy silk merchant and prominent habitant of Chipping Campden  is now owned by the National Trust. The Court Barn Museum in the town tells the story of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the area. The church of St James boasts spectacular 120ft tower and is home to one of the oldest alter tapestries and largest brasses in England.

Chipping Campden is well known for its terraced High Street which dates from the 14th to the 17th century. You will find no shortage of excellent places to eat, drink and stay with an good selection of hotels, pubs, B&Bs, and holiday cottages to rent.

There are two famous and historic gardens nearby: at Hidcote Manor Garden, owned and managed by the National Trust, and at Kiftsgate (privately owned but open to the public). The 104 mile Cotswold way starts in the town which make it popular with walkers.

Chipping Campden also celebrates a rather eccentric annual event, the famous Cotswold Olimpicks Games.
