Top Viewing Locations for the Severn Bore
Newnham-on-Severn
One of the earliest points to see the bore in action. The White Hart Inn at Broadoak offers a great viewing location. Standing in the churchyard on the high cliff provides a panoramic view of the bore navigating the Horseshoe Bend.
Minsterworth
One of the most popular viewing locations along the River Severn. The Severn Bore Inn is a great spot to watch the wave while enjoying a meal or drink. Other excellent access points include Minsterworth Church and the Bird-in-Hand pub.
Stonebench
A well-known Severn Bore hotspot, Stonebench is located 3 miles from Gloucester. Turn right into Elmore Lane, cross the ship canal, and the River Severn is ahead. Be warned: this area can get very congested, and after the bore passes, the river level rises rapidly and can flood onto the road.
Over Bridge (Telford’s Bridge)
Just 1 mile from Gloucester along the A40, Over Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford, offers an excellent vantage point. It is a popular viewing spot for the bore’s final approach before it fades due to the weirs near the city.
Maisemore Bridge
A unique vantage point to witness the reflex wave, where the bore rebounds and flows back downstream approximately 10 minutes after hitting the weir. Maisemore Bridge location.
Lower Parting
An interesting location where the Severn Bore splits into two river channels. A fascinating spot to watch the wave’s movement before it continues upstream. Lower Parting location.
Manor Ditch
About ¾ mile downstream from Lower Parting, this is where the bore can reach its highest point—sometimes up to ten feet high—as it surges around a sharp bend.
Longney
A quieter location with fewer crowds, perfect for those wanting a peaceful viewing experience. Longney location.
Elmore Back
A rural setting that provides an excellent chance to watch the bore gain momentum as it moves upstream. Elmore Back location.
Framilode
A classic riverside viewing area where the bore builds strength before heading towards Gloucester. Framilode location.
Epney
A great riverside access point with fewer crowds, ideal for photographers looking to capture the bore in action. Epney location.
