Shot in Cheltenham - Photographs from the past
Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum has a vast collection of photographs from the past of many different local places in the town.
A small selection of these are on show at the main library and local studies library until 7 September. While we have identified the places in most of the photos on show, there are people in them who we’d like to identify and no doubt many stories to be revealed.
If you think you might know something about one of the photographs on show then you can complete a form at the library – we’d love to hear from you and find out more.
Linked to this we are launching a photographic competition to create an archive for the future. If you would like to go out and take a photograph of Cheltenham with the possibility of it becoming part of the museum collection then you can enter the competition through flickr. The competition goes live on I September with full details on our website, www.cheltenham.artgallery.museum
Exhibitions & Education Manager, Sophia Wilson says : We’d like people to go out and take any view of Cheltenham which appeals to them then upload it on our flickr site One day in Town Flickr Group. The competition ends 31 October after this we’ll select 100 photographs to become part of the Art Gallery & Museum archive therefore giving us a comprehensive collection of images of Cheltenham in 2011. This will be quite unique as so often there are gaps in collections and we don’t always know the full story behind the picture.
