REVIEW: Save The Last Dance For Me
Set in 1963 this great musical centres on a love story between a teenage girl from Luton and a black US engineer stationed at an air base in Lowestoft.
The singers and musicians are excellent and right from the opening bars of the overture your foot starts tapping to hit songs such as, amongst others, ‘Teenager in Love’, ‘Please Mr Postman’ and of course the title song ‘Save the Last Dance for Me’. All of the show’s songs are by the famous songwriting partnership of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. They also wrote 25 songs for Elvis Presley, a number of which you’ll hear in the show. Stand out vocals include the two leads, Kieran McGinn, playing Curtis, and Elizabeth Carter as Marie. Also cheeky chappy Milton played by Lee Honey-Jones.
There’s humour and pathos too. Carlos, the Italian icecream seller with a Wolverhampton accent has some cheesy chat up lines whilst, after the interval, the tone becomes more melancholy. Will the love struck couple be able to overcome their cultural differences to stay together?
The show deserved its standing ovation. As a member of the audience said on leaving “that was absolutely excellent.”
