Three weeks of Easter events at Chedworth Roman Villa
Chedworth Roman Villa has prepared an action-packed Easter programme, as part of the celebrations of its 150th anniversary season, with new activities, Discovery dome shows and a new Eggsplorer trail, sponsored by Cadbury’s.
This year marks 150 years since Victorians discovered and excavated Chedworth Roman Villa in 1864. To celebrate this significant anniversary National Trust has planned three weeks of Easter holiday events and new activities.
Alex Auden, Operations Manager at Chedworth Roman Villa says: “This year, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Villa’s discovery in 1864, our focus is on helping visitors to make their own discoveries about this extraordinary site. The National Trust has teamed up with a PhD student from the University of Bath, John Tredinnick, to develop a superb planetarium-style show which brings to life the history of the Roman Villa, one of the country’s most important Roman sites.’
Sigute Barniskyte, Visitor Services Co-ordinator, at Chedworth Roman Villa adds: ‘The discovery and exploration theme is also reflected in the new Easter Eggsplorer trail. Children will become little explorers, rediscovering the Roman Villa as Victorians would have done 150 years ago. Their efforts, of course, will be rewarded with a chocolate egghead prize, sponsored by Cadbury’s.’
‘There will be special tours and displays of Roman life style and traditions by our re-enactors in Roman costume. The lovely new Salway building will be buzzing with family activities, including a couple of new crafts this Easter,’
Sigute adds: ‘Our local archaeologist and ancient coin specialist Roger will be back by popular demand to display and talk about Roman as well as Victorian coins. And we will also host a group from London City University demonstrating conservation in action.’
It was due to one fortunate ferreting day in 1864 that Chedworth Roman Villa was discovered after lying hidden for nearly 1600 years. This special anniversary is celebrated alongside with another significant date – 90 years since the Villa has been in the care of National Trust.
Chedworth Roman Villa Easter programme runs from 7 April to 27 April. The holiday planner, with a full list of activities and events is available to download from the National trust website.
