Fifty days until kick off
There are just 50 days to go until the start of Rugby World Cup 2015.
The countdown to the opening match of the Rugby World Cup 2015 is well and truly on, with the Webb Ellis Cup edging its way closer to Twickenham for the start of the Tournament on September 18, 2015.
To mark this, Host City Gloucester will be getting together Rugby stars, past and present, for an event at Gloucester City Museum.
Former cherry and white stars Adam Balding, Terry Fanolua and others, will meet alongside their portraits painted by local artist Russell Haines at the ‘WOW Rugby’ exhibition in the museum.
Russell said: “This has been a real labour of love to put the paintings together and display them at this event. Getting to know the Gloucester legends has been a pleasure.”
“It’s really exciting to be involved in the countdown to the Rugby World Cup, and I can’t wait to see world class Rugby being played at Kingsholm.”
They will be joined by a Roman Centurion to tie into the Tournament Organiser England Rugby 2015’s Trophy Tour theme of “What the Romans did for us”, which acknowledges Gloucestershire’s connections with the Roman Empire.
The remainder of the tour will see the famous cup appearing at the historic Hadrian’s Wall before continuing south with London the final destination in time for the Opening Ceremony.
With Gloucester set to welcome Tonga and Georgia for the opening match in pool C on September 19, 2015, work on the Fanzone in the Docks is well underway. The Fanzone will provide fans with the opportunity to watch the Games on a big screen, as well as enjoy a host of events throughout the Tournament.
Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “Excitement is really building and final preparations are being made over the next 50 days to welcome visitors from a across the world to our city.”
“Come September, we’ll be ready for the Rugby World Cup 2015 to arrive and I am sure the people of Gloucester are as excited as I am to play host to such a sporting spectacle.”
