Bumper weekend of films planned for Cheltenham’s Big Screen in the Gardens
Cheltenham’s newest free attraction – the Big Screen in the Gardens – is set to host a packed programme of films for all to enjoy this coming weekend.
The summer-long event which has seen a giant screen erected in the town’s Imperial Gardens has already proved incredibly popular with daily broadcasts of the Tokyo Olympics, live cricket and a number of concerts from the BBC Proms. It’s been the screening of a range of classic movies that have really drawn the crowds however, with large audiences filling Imperial Gardens on the summer evenings to watch the likes of Grease, The Greatest Showman and Toy Story.
This coming weekend will kick off on Friday 13 August with Disney favourites Coco, followed by Toy Story 4. Friday evening will see one of the all-time British classics, the original 1969 version of The Italian Job. On Saturday, audiences will have the chance to catch other popular family classics, including the new, 2019 remake of The Lion King, the iconic and timeless The Wizard of Oz and, in the evening, the ever-popular Mamma Mia.
On Sunday, the Big Screen in the Gardens will be showing two films with strong environmental and climate changes themes, with WALL-E in the morning and Big Miracle in the afternoon. To mark this climate awareness theme for the day, alongside these two films Imperial Gardens will also host a number of local climate charities and organisations who will be providing information to the public on the many local initiatives underway in and around Cheltenham to help combat climate change and support the town’s target of being carbon neutral by 2030.

It’s been particularly lovely to see so many families coming into town and enjoying the screenings. We’re looking forward to this coming weekend and what should be a fantastic weekend to enjoy some absolute classics in these beautiful gardens and stunning Regency setting.”
Councillor Max Wilkinson, cabinet member for climate emergency at Cheltenham Borough Council, said “The international climate change report released this week and the wildfires burning in Greece and elsewhere remind us there’s no time to waste and we all need to do our bit. To achieve our shared aim to battle the climate emergency and realise a carbon neutral Cheltenham, we need to persuade as many people as we can that they can make a difference.
“WALL-E and Big Miracle reminds us of the duty we all have to look after the world around us – whether that’s cutting pollution or showing compassion for animals. I’d like to say a huge thanks to all the environmental group volunteers who will be there on Sunday to talk to people moved by these films and the climate emergency.
“The Cheltenham Zero Partnership will be working across the borough over time to include as many people as possible in local efforts to protect our planet and create a better environment for all of us.”
The Big Screen in the Gardens will run until the 30 August and forms part of a wider programme of activity that focuses on supporting the town’s economic recovery.
