Lighting up Gloucester's oldest landmark this autumn
There’s less than a week to go until Light Eternal arrives at Gloucester Cathedral!
The countdown is on until this brand-new light and sound installation, created by Luxmuralis, opens to the public and there’s still time to purchase your tickets to see it
Between 19 and 28 October, members of the public are invited to come and experience Gloucester Cathedral like never before. ‘Light Eternal: Yesterday, Today, Forever’ will take visitors on a journey that delves into the Cathedral’s 1,000 year long history, examining its breathtaking architecture and stained glass, as well as its more recent life as a famous filming location. Almost every inch of the inside of the building will be covered with light projections, accompanied by a beautiful bespoke soundtrack. This ground-breaking installation has been created by the world-renowned projection art gallery, Luxmuralis, whose artwork has toured around historic spaces throughout the UK. Excitingly, Light Eternal is bespoke to Gloucester Cathedral so this is a one-off opportunity to come and see it.
The installation will be open between 6.15pm-10pm, with last entry at 8.45pm, and tickets can be purchased in advance via the Cathedral website. The ‘VIP Experience’, which offers the chance to view the installation from up high in the historic Tribune Gallery and Bridge Chapel, has now sold out, but general admission tickets are still available; these are priced at £9.50 per adult and £6 per child (6-17 years, under 6s go free). It is also possible to buy tickets on the door, subject to availability.
Whilst the installation is running, delicious refreshments will be available to purchase from traders on Cathedral Green. This includes everything from hot drinks, crepes and cakes to a hog roast, pizza and fish and chips. It promises to be an evening to remember for visitors of all ages.

Whether you’re a regular visitor or are coming here for the very first time, we hope that Light Eternal will encourage people to step inside and encounter this building in new and innovative ways. It is brilliant to see that so many people have already booked to come and see it – as always, all are most welcome.”
Peter Walker, Artistic Director and Lead Artist at Luxmuralis, added:
“The response to Light Eternal so far has been fantastic. This will be the first time in over 1,000 years that the Cathedral has had such an artwork installed. It will be wonderful to see people of all ages, from around the city and further afield, walk through the ancient architecture and discover the Cathedral anew in what will be a truly immersive experience. We are looking forward to seeing this original artwork, which has been created for the Cathedral, come to life and paint the walls with light.”
