On a crisp winter night, we made our way to the Spectacle of Light at Sudeley Castle. This annual event (this is it's ninth year), never fails to impress, and this year’s theme of Sleeping Beauty delivered a truly enchanting experience.
We were joined by our son, his partner, and our grandchildren, making the evening extra special. Our eldest grandchild, nearly three, was mesmerised by the glowing illuminations, frequently asking, “Is the princess in the castle?” and “Where’s the princess?” Meanwhile, our youngest, at just six months old, enjoyed the lights and magical music with wide-eyed wonder.

The trail itself was breathtaking, meandering through Sudeley Castle's wonderful gardens and beautifully lit pathways. Along the way, we encountered the wicked fairy, who added a touch of interaction to the evening. When she asked if I had a wish, I replied, “Is there a princess?” With a cheeky grin and a wink, she said, “Of course there is, but she’s asleep in her bed right now. She’s waiting for a prince to help wake her up—could that be you?” That playful response sparked even more excitement from our granddaughter.

As we approached Sudeley Castle's Rose Garden, an amazing sight unfolded before us—a grand four-poster bed illuminated across the vista, with the sleeping princess at its centre. It was a breathtaking moment, and our granddaughter, ever curious, asked, “Why is the princess in a pond?” A classic question that brought laughter to us all and added to the magic of the evening.
Halfway through the trail, we paused for hot chocolate and doughnuts, a welcome treat on such a chilly night. Refreshed, we continued past the castle ruins and chapel, where the lights and music gradually made it clear that an exciting finale was approaching. At the end of the trail, we saw them—the princess and her prince! Our granddaughter, who had been so eager to find the princess, suddenly turned shy, staring at Sleeping Beauty in awe. We captured the moment with a photo that will be a treasured family memory forever.
