Westonbirt Arboretum Live Music – Unique Location
Explore Gloucestershire could not resist the allure of an open air concert at Westonbirt Arboretum , near Tetbury and we eagerly went to experience what turned out to be two evenings of superb entertainment when we saw Keane and the legendary Blondie.
We were not sure what to expect from the Forestry Commission event but upon our arrival our entry was quickly established with efficient parking instructions and swift security (no bottles or cans allowed - oh, and also no umbrellas).
The whole site was well arranged with standing room only in front of the huge stage. Apart from that you could park your picnic wherever you wished. Everyone seemed to have brought picnic rugs, chairs and cooler boxes. At least we had remembered chairs and waterproofs and the few rain showers during Keane were not ruined by inadequate clothing. One word of advice – be prepared for all weathers – the show will go on and you will enjoy it! Toilets, bar and food outlets were situated around the perimeter of the site so you could not miss anything wherever you were.
Another surprise – you’re never too old. For both concerts the age range was diverse and for some was a family affair (although we saw few very young children). There was a bit of a party atmosphere throughout (even during Keane and the rain). The Forestry Commission also managed to cater for everyone and there was even a disabled viewing platform.
And so to the bands:
Keane
The supporting acts Everything Everything and the Helio Sequence paved the way for the excellent Keane. They played songs from their new album Night Train which seemed to slot in nicely with their older hits as they performed for an hour and three quarters. The sun went down and the whole ambience of the setting changed. The trees look amazing in silhouette. We sang along to ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, we shone torches and we went home smiling and happy. Even the band declared their urge so hug a tree at the end of an excellent if slightly damp evening.
Blondie
Well Blondie seem to be around forever and I certainly grew up with them. (It’s one thing I have in common with a teenage daughter- shock, horror!) Playing music from a band that has been around for over 30 years is still cool. Debbie Harry looked pretty good for her 64 years (wearing a platinum blonde wig she could have passed for 30 from where I stood). We sang along to all the classics including ‘Denis’, ‘Heart of Glass’, ‘Atomic’,’ Call Me’ and my favourite,’ Sunday Girl’. With a great band behind her Blondie did not fail to disappoint and with a new album in the pipeline I think they may be around for quite a while longer.
