Air Tattoo has 'SIX' appeal, say enthusiasts!
A leading UK aviation website has announced that the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, in the heart of the Cotswolds, provided six of the Top 10 airshow moments of 2012.
UK Airshow Review, which has more than 8,000 members, said that last summer’s Air Tattoo will be remembered as “one of the best shows in recent memory”, providing “iconic moments and historic appearances”.
Among the six highlights were rare appearances by the US Air Force B-2 ‘Spirit’ stealth bomber, a Japanese Air Self Defense Force Boeing KC-767J tanker and a “thrilling” flying display by the South Korean Black Eagles aerobatic display team.
Other highlights featured in the Top 10 were displays by a Polish Air Force MiG-29 Fulcrum and an iconic EIIR formation by 27 Hawk jets to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Website spokesman Daniel Butcher said: “Each year, our team of writers and photographers collate a list of what they thought to be the defining moments of any given airshow season. That the Air Tattoo provided so many highlights in a year that saw strong competition is testament to the fact that it got the tone spot on, marrying exceptional aircraft with relevant static and ground displays, educated, entertaining commentary, and plenty of firsts and one-offs."
Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince said he was delighted that the Top 10 featured so many Fairford participants. He said: “It’s largely due to our huge army of volunteers who return each year to help stage the Air Tattoo that the airshow has built up an international reputation for excellence. It is this reputation that helps us attract so many exciting and rare aircraft from around the world. It’s great to know that all the hard work involved in bringing such a wide variety of aircraft to the Cotswolds each year is appreciated and it encourages us to achieve even greater things in July.”
The Air Tattoo, which is staged in support of the RAF Charitable Trust, takes place on July 20-21, 2013. Organisers announced today (Monday, January 7) that they were extending by one week the period during which Super Earlybird tickets would be available.
