REVIEW: Surprises at The Everyman, Cheltenham
A science fiction fantasy from the acclaimed playwright Alan Ayckbourn.
Written and directed by Ayckbourn ‘Surprises’ does just that. Set in the future it introduces us to time travel, trips to Mars and hilarious androids. In Act One Ayesha Antoine plays Grace the stroppy teenager bringing in the universal themes of love and longevity.
Richard Stacey steals the show in Act Two as the strange but excellent robot with a terrible laugh. Can love be limitless, even if we live to seven score years? Does love have a price? These are the questions posed by the weird and wonderful characters inhabiting this futuristic world.
In three Acts with two intervals the play became disjointed with the first Act quite different in tone from the rest of the play. The humour won the day, however, and the futuristic take on old themes will appeal across the generations.
Surprises runs until Saturday 2 March.
